Jefferson-Madison Regional Library Book Sale

Once again I was blown away by my local library's yearly book sale.  If you weren't already aware that Charlottesville, Virginia, is a scholarly town, you should come visit us.  We have the Virginia Book Festival, many used, new, and antique book stores, several fine local libraries, and, of course, Thomas Jefferson's University of Virginia and Monticello.

But, getting back to the book sale.  I really believe you help mother Earth by recycling your books (giving them to your library for resale) and buying used books, not to mention supporting local businesses and the library.  My library's sale is huge, well known, and well attended.  Last year, the nine-day sale made around $200,000!  Between my husband and myself, we spent around $38 and got an enormous bag of books.  They had many genres including fiction, nonfiction, art, biographies, history, and so on.  There are hard cover, paperback, vintage, antique, and audio books, CDs, and even some art for unreal prices.  Donations are accepted year round.

Support your community and local library by volunteering time, donating books or money or purchasing books from your library.

Amazon Kindle Review

I just got a Kindle and so far I like it BUT I don't have the anytime connectability that I did with my Nook.  The feature was available on some Kindles, but I didn't pay extra for it.  My Kindle does have e-mail, internet, and wifi connectability but where I've it sometimes, the wifi is not there when I need it.  This isn't a problem at the airport, hotels, and my house.  I like that I can watch movies and surf the net on a bigger screen when traveling than with my Iphone.  One major problem with changing your e-reader brands is that you lose the books you bought (and often paid close to full price if not full price these days) on the old e-reader.  When I buy a book, it ought to be available to me in any way I choose to read it.  I ought to be able to lend it, to move it from one piece of technology to another, to print it, or to do whatever else I wish to do.  One thing I love about my Kindle that is drastically different from my Nook is that I have backlighting to read in bed and on the plane.

Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And, departing, leave behind us
Footprints on the sands of time.
